It was a day walking along the Namsan path in deep sadness, keeping my eyes fixed on the ground.
An unexpected encounter with blooming hydrangeas awakened frozen sense and brought emotional recovery.
Mountain Hydrangea is a native plant of Namsan, Korea. It has a unique ecological structure where “fake flowers” that attract insects coexist with “real flowers” that bear fruit.
This unique structure serves as a visual metaphor for the relationship between outward appearance and inner essence- or the self we show to others and who we truly are. The intricate brass, crafted to look like real flowers, express the paradox of the showy “fake flowers”
In contrast, the delicate and cloud-like steel mesh represents the hidden “real flowers.”
But, the true light shines directly from within the mesh center. As if proving that the hidden inner space is the real source of light, the flower lives on as a lasting landscape through the harmony of different texture of metal and light.

Seoul is a city where a hyper-modern landscape and old, fading places exist side by side. Behind the city’s raid development, there is a deep shadow of time, as strong as its light.
Cold stainless steel represent the buildings of the city. Its shadow is mode of Oksa, a traditional raw silk, dyed with link. It holds layers of time and memories from the past.
Materials that carry different times come together under the single light, creating a deep and layered landscape.
Oksa(a traditional Korean raw silk with natural slubs)라는 한국 고유의 전통 실크 원단의 불규칙하고 거친 결 위에 주름을 넣어 과거와 현재가 겹쳐지는 구겨진 시간을 표현했습니다.

a: mirror: A is an embroidery series inspired by the Korean gyeongdae (mirror stand) where furniture, embroidery and mirror merge into a single object.
One side shows an embroidered interpretation of Gimyeongdo, a traditional Korean painting genre that scholars arranged objects that embodied their values, aspirations and way of life.
Drawing from the visual language of Korean folk painting, each embroidery is an original Gimyeongdo composition inspired by the cycle of the four seasons. Spring, summer, autumn and winter become metaphors for recurring stages of human life- birth, contemplation, love and frutition.
The other side is a mirror. As the viewer encounters their own reflection, the embroidered scene and the present self overlap, bringing memory into dialogue with cultural inheritance.
Inspired by Paul Ricoeur’s Narrative Identity.

Muhwa is a Seoul-based design duo by Suri Lee and Dohae. Their practice explores how objects can become a medium to look inward.
They see identity as something that is continuously shaped through time, memories, and relationships. Their work begins with Korean cultural images, materials, and ways of making, which they research and reinterpret through contemporary forms and processes.
At the center of their practice is room a:A, a space for a person who is always reshaping oneself. In this idea, ‘a’ represents an inner space, while ‘:” represents the objects as a mediator between the outside world and the self. ‘A’ is the self that is encountered through this work.
Through furniture and objects, Muhwa creates moments of reflection, where personal experience and cultural memory, inviting people to pause, reflect, and encounter themselves through things.
